Pendeen, Cornwall, 30 September 2026 – A third edition of Short Walks Around Pendeen, the pocket guide to the paths and lanes of the village, is due out in time for Christmas. Local author Peter Wilkinson has updated the book after many requests from residents and visitors since the second edition sold out.

Pendeen has changed since 2018. Every walk has been walked again and the directions brought up to date: the Fir Trees walk follows a new route, stiles have become gates, and landmarks that have gone have been replaced by new ones. Around 300 typos, errors and awkward bits of wording have been fixed along the way.
The new edition is also longer. It adds an optional extension from the Woon Gumpus Common walk to Chun Quoit and Chun Castle, an important local site that visitors often ask about, with a little of its history. There is also a safety note for Portheras Cove and more about the revitalised leat. The book is printed in full colour, at a size that fits a coat pocket.
In the preface, the author explains why the book exists: “When folks come to visit they often ask for directions for short walks around Pendeen so they can explore the village. Pendeen has a number of footpaths but not all of them have clear starting points and only a few have actual signs. This book is an attempt to fill the gap.”
Availability
Copies are expected in local outlets in time for Christmas. The price will be announced nearer the time.
About the book
Short Walks Around Pendeen (third edition, 2026) describes seven short walks in and around Pendeen, on the far west tip of Cornwall. They follow the half-hidden paths and lanes of the village and go out to the cliffs, Portheras Cove, Pendeen Carn and the moors. Each walk has a summary of its length, climb and surface, a map, and drawings by the author.

Peter Wilkinson lives in Pendeen. He wrote the first edition of the book in 2015.
