Chun Quoit and the Straw Dogs farm

In which we make it to Chun Quoit, but not to the Straw Dogs farm

Jenny has located the farm where Straw Dogs was made and it is only a few hundred metres away so I set off to walk there, taking in Chun Quoit on the way.  The weather was typical Pendeen – not cold but wet, misty and windy. Fred thought it was a great walk, at least at first, since it was off-lead right from the front door.

We went up the grassy end of Carn View Terrace; left on the the track that is the extension of St John’s Terrace; across the Penzance road (North Road and on the the wonderfully named Woon Grumpus Common.  Although there are paths marked on the map they are on in the right places, but it is access land, and the quoit is viable so we just headed for it.

The heather and gorse moor was pretty waterlogged in places but Fred is a terrier and although he doesn’t like wet feet, he never gives up.  The weather cleared briefly when we reached the quoit. There is a cropped grassy area around the quoit and Fred reported that it carried the sent of Mesolithic dogs.

Although the weather cleared while we were at the quoit it was clear there was a line of nasty squalls heading our way from the northwest so I said to Fred “Home?” and he at once voted with his feet and high-tailed off in the direction from which we had come. He led the way, unerringly following every twist and turn made on the way up; only deviating from the exact root to exploit what little shelter that was on offer.

Jenny has identified the farm where Straw Dogs was made as Tor Noon, about 500m north of Chun Quoit – see the map, and the target for next time…
